History of the capoeira cord : 

The capoeira cord, also called cordão, is indicating the grade of a capoeirist within a group (although a lot of groups do not have graduation system). It has been introduced by Mestre Bimba and its Capoeira Regional who used formerly kerchief to pay tribute to "la velha guarda" who used to wear them around the neck to protect themselves from the armed adversary.
